In Sharjah, a woman is convicted of having an abortion

The Sharjah Criminal Court considers the case of an aborted woman.

In Sharjah, a married woman was tried for medical termination of pregnancy by taking the pills she ordered over the Internet.

According to the Sharjah Criminal Court, at the time of taking the pills, the 24-year-old woman was in her sixth week of pregnancy.

According to a medical report, a Syrian native took 15 tablets of Misoprostol, a drug used to terminate a pregnancy.

The husband of the defendant stated that he did not know that his wife ordered and took the pills.

The woman denied the charges of the court, insisting that she was only taking medications prescribed by a doctor.

"I became pregnant at the end of April this year and went to a clinic in Sharjah, where the doctor told me that I was pregnant," the woman claims.

After the first consultation with the doctor, the woman, despite taking the prescribed medication, bleeding started.

The husband brought his pregnant wife to Al Qashimi Hospital in Sharjah, where doctors discovered that the woman had an abortion.

Answering police questions, the defendant claimed that she ordered pills on the Internet, not knowing that it was illegal.

However, earlier at interrogations the defendant denied the fact of ordering or taking the pills, claiming that she took only those medicines that were prescribed by the doctor.

"My stomach was very sore, and I went to the hospital, they prescribed me drugs, except for which I did not take anything else," the woman insists.

Recall that an abortion in the UAE is legal only if the pregnancy threatens the life of the mother, or if the fetus has abnormalities due to which the child will not survive, while the gestation period should not exceed 120 days. In other cases, abortion is prohibited in all emirates.

The next hearing is scheduled for September.
